Accra Academy marks 83rd Founders Day

Accra Academy has marked its 83rd Founders Day celebration with a call on the students to emulate the selflessness, sacrifice and patriotism exhibited by the founding fathers of the school.

A former headmaster of the school, Mr Vincent Birch Freeman, who made the call, noted that those virtues exhibited by the founders had made the school what it was today, producing eminent personalities, such as three Speakers of Parliament – Justice D.F. Annan, Mr Peter Ala Adjetey (both of blessed memory) and Mr Edward Doe Adjaho, as well as a host of others who have served in various capacities in Ghana and abroad.

The Founders Day, which was held at the school’s Interact Square, was on the theme: “Re-living The Tenets of the Accra Academy — Selflessness, Sacrifice and Patriotism.”

The day is held each year in honour of four courageous personalities – George Kofi Konuah, James Akwei Halm-Addo, Samuel Neils Awuletey and Godfried Narku Alema – who contributed to the establishment and development of the school.

They established Accra Academy on Monday, July 20, 1931 with the aim of providing excellent and affordable education to students from less-endowed communities.

The event was held alongside the inauguration of the four newly constructed halls of the school. They are the Nana Akuoko Sarpong Hall, the Peter Ala Adjetey Hall, Nana Wereko Ampem Hall and the Nana Awuah Darko Ampem Hall.

According to Mr Freeman, the founders worked for five years without taking salaries while the teachers and other staff members were on allowances in the early stages of the establishment of the school.

“The Founders Awards, namely the K.G. Konuah, J.A. Halm-Addo, S.N. Awuletey and the G.N. Alema awards instituted by the school, are attempts not only to perpetuate the memory of the founders but also to inspire all members of the Bleoo fraternity,” he said.

Accra Academy, he said, had been noted over the years for its discipline, and urged the current batch of students to hold on to that.

Representatives of the Board of Governors, management, headmaster, old boys, parents, staff and students of the school, in a solidarity message commended the contribution the school had made to national development.
