The phone, known as Infinix HOT 2, uses the latest version of the Android One programme.

The Android One programme runs the Android operating system (OP) created by Google and mainly targeted at consumers in the developing world.

The programme also enables users of Infinix HOT 2 to conveniently shop online with guaranteed software upgrades up to two years after release.

Ghana is the second African country to benefit from the new Android software after Nigeria.

The phone also has premium hardware specifications and a wide range of customised applications that will enhance the lifestyle of its users, especially those who engage in online shopping.

The launch

Speaking at the launch in Accra, the Country Manager of Jumia, Ms Funlola Abe, said the device was developed by Infinix Mobility, a mobile company, in collaboration with Jumia, an online shopping centre; Google, an Internet using search engine, and MTN, a telecommunications company.

“Infinix Hot 2 is set to break communication barriers in Ghana and beyond. It is a ‘must have’ for everyone,” she said.

She said the OS was developed by Google and could only be accessed on the Infinix HOT 2 phone.

Touching on the partnership, Ms Abe said the device was created because of the strong mobile penetration in Africa.

"More people are using online to shop instead of the normal traditional shopping trend and Jumia provides the convenient platform for the evolution of the African online shopping culture," she said.

Additionally, she said, Jumia afforded the everyday Ghanaian customer the opportunity to order the Infinix Hot 2 from the comfort of his or her home or office.

She said one of the key attributes of the new smart phone was that it made it easier to get things done at a faster speed and was also much more affordable when purchased at Jumia.

Features of the phone

On the features of the phone, Ms Abe said users of Infinix HOT 2 could automatically enable the new battery saver feature to extend battery life by 90 minutes.

"Users can also see the estimated time left before they need to recharge, and when charging, they can also see the estimated time for the battery to become fully charged," she said.

Smart phone industry

In his address, the Managing Director of Infinix Mobility, Mr Benjamin Jiang, said the phone would redefine the smart phone industry in Ghana.

"At Infinix, we believe that Ghanaian end users deserve to experience the latest technology smart phones at competitive prices," he said.

For her part, the Country Manager of Google, Madam Estelle Akofio-Sowah, expressed delight at the collaboration between Google and Infinix Mobility, adding, "We are looking forward to working with Infinix Mobility to empower the next billion people."
