‘South Tongu needs unity to develop’

Three stalwarts of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the South Tongu Constituency have resolved to work together to lift the living standards of the people, as well as help the NDC retain political power in 2016.

The three told the Daily Graphic that it had become imperative for members of the NDC across the country to step up efforts and work together as a team to ensure that the NDC attained its better Ghana agenda as promised in the 2012 election.

The three are Dr Bernard Kwasi Glover, a founder member of the NDC and father figure  of the party in the constituency; Member of Parliament (MP) for the South Tongu Constituency, Mr Koblah Mensah Woyome, and the District Chief Executive (DCE) of the South Tongu Assembly, Mr Samuel  Eworyi.

The South Tongu District is one of the strongholds of the NDC. It garnered 29,972, representing 92 per cent of votes in the constituency in the first round of the 2008 elections and got 32,122 representing 91.86 per cent in the run-off whilst its parliamentary candidate got 28, 193, representing 86.1 per cent. In the 2012 election, the NDC polled 36,989, representing 92.93 per cent while its parliamentary candidate polled 32,785, representing 82.58 per cent.

Dr Glover

According to Dr Glover, the South Tongu District is one district “we have co-operated to help build as a model district.”

He said since the district was an NDC stronghold, they had worked hard since 1992 to achieve some development strides in tourism, agriculture and aquaculture, education and health, among other sectors.

He said for almost two decades, the NDC fraternity within the district had worked as a team and achieved results.

“If we can still put our shoulders to the wheels and work together, we will achieve greater heights,” Dr Glover said.

He urged the MP and the DCE to lead the unity crusade by showing leadership by example through constant dialogue and networking for prosperity for all.

He said though the MP and the DCE were both saddled with their own problems, including funding challenges, he had urged them to adopt innovative measures to increase their internally generated funds to meet their development needs.

Dr Glover stated that there were people who were bent on destroying others for selfish political gains.

“We do not have to be vicious in order to gain an advantage over the other. When you do not have evidence, please do not run your opponent down,” Dr Glover appealed.

MP South Tongu

Mr Mensah Woyome said he enjoyed working and supporting the development process to put smiles on the faces of his constituents.

According to the MP, he is currently engaged in a lot of social interventions to bring some relief to his constituents.

He recalled that though there were deliberate attempts to run him down with false and baseless allegations during the 2012 elections, he had decided to bury the hatchet and work with commitment and dedication with the DCE to improve the living standards in the constituency.

“My core interest is to work together with the DCE and I do hope that the DCE will heavily support my effort and the general process of developing the area,” he said.

He further disclosed that some people within the constituency were in the habit of hatching plots to cause friction in the otherwise peaceful constituency and, therefore, enjoined the DCE and the leadership of the NDC within the constituency to kill that attitude.

DCE South Tongu

Mr Eworyi, who assumed the post of DCE barely four months ago, pointed out that the people of South Tongu were confronted with daily challenges which required “all of us as DCE, MP, assembly members, NDC, and all identifiable groups to work together for rapid socio-economic development.

“I believe in neutrality and responsible actions,” he told the Daily Graphic and called for mutual co-operation for the betterment of the constituency.

“We cannot develop as a district or constituency when we have different socio-economic and political agenda and aspirations,” he declared and pleaded with everybody in the district to do away with what he called “cosmetics” to really work in the interest of the people.

He said his doors were always opened, particularly to his MP, for sharing ideas, since he alone did not possess what it work to develop the district.
