New Achimota residents decry bad state of roads

Angry youth at New Achimota are threatening to demonstrate and mount roadblocks in protest against what they describe as bad road network in the area.

The road along the Kingsby Hotel leading to the roundabout extending to Fishpond is unmotorable, thus compelling road users and the youth in the area to serve notice of their intention to hit the streets as a signal to the appropriate authorities to repair the road.

As the main link road to Abeka-Lapaz, vehicle drivers from Taifa and Dome use the road in a bid to avoid the heavy traffic on the main Achimota-Kwame Nkrumah Circle road during the rush hour.

The bumpy nature of the road leading to Fishpond has caused many vehicles to break down along that route, and to make it worse,  heaps of sand deposited along the road cause further discomfort to drivers.

Residents complain

A resident, Mr Ben Darkwah, told the Daily Graphic that authorities had paid lip-service to their complaints  over the years  and added that they were ready to express their displeasure by way of a demonstration.

Commenting on the matter to the Daily Graphic, the Member of Parliament for Trobu, Mr Moses Anim, said a private developer deposited the heaps of sand on the road.

He said he had personally supported the effort to make the road motorable by engaging the services of contractors to smoothen the road.

Formal complaint

When contacted, the Ga West Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Atuquaye Quaye, said it was wrong for a private citizen to deposit heaps of sand on the road and advised the concerned youth to make a formal complaint to the assembly.

He said the assembly could only make the road motorable because it did not have a budget to tar roads.
