Laboratory scientists vow to root out quacks

The Ghana Association of Biomedical Laboratory Scientists (GABMLS) has vowed to collaborate with security agencies to close down illegal medical laboratories.
The association said those operating illegal laboratories would be “systematically pursued” within the confines of the law.

According to the President of the association, Prince Sodoke Amuzu, the move was intended to root out the quacks in the system and make professionalism the hallmark of the practice.

He was delivering a speech at the 2013 annual GABMLS regional congress in Accra yesterday. The congress had the theme, “Building Quality Medical Laboratory: A Pre-Requisite In a Regulated Environment.”

The association was formed in 2002 with the main purpose of developing public interest by encouraging the study, modernising and improving the practice of biomedical laboratory science.

Prince Amuzu stressed that the practice of medical laboratory science was regulated by law so practitioners required licences to operate, regardless of their academic qualification.

For his part, the President of the Association of Private Medical Laboratories, Mr Hudson Afadi Larbi, said medical laboratory services and practice were essential for patient care and urged practitioners to strive to meet the needs of patients.

He pledged the association’s commitment to work within the confines of the law and provide quality medical services to clients.

The Greater Accra Regional Director of Health Services, Dr Linda Vanotoo, charged the participants to adhere to standards and help wipe out individuals and organisations that want to bring the image of the profession into disrepute.

“Do not be negligent; go beyond what you are doing in order to achieve more for the health sector and the country as a whole,” she urged them.
