Mamprugu Overlord calls for unity in new region

The Overlord of the Mamprugu Traditional Area, Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga, has called on the chiefs and people of the newly carved North East Region to unite and rekindle the spirit of volunteerism and self-help in the communities in support of the development of the area.

He said the government alone could not provide all the needs of the people, hence the need for them to rekindle the spirit of volunteerism and contribute their quota to bring massive development to the newly carved region.

"Government alone cannot provide all our needs let us pull ourselves up by our own bootstraps. I shall continue to play my role as a vanguard of our shared interest," he promised.

Naa Bohagu Sheriga made the call at a press conference held at the Nayiri’s Palace in Nalerigu last Tuesday, to thank the people of the area for overwhelmingly endorsing the creation of the North East Region.

Resource allocation

He said with the creation of the new region, resources would be distributed in a fair and just manner among all the communities in the region to ensure equal development in the area, stating that, " There shall be no covert or overt attempt to sideline or neglect any area."

Naa Bohagu Sheriga, who also talked about the need for the peace in the area to be maintained said, "peace is a sine qua non to development; I urge all to maintain the peace and social cohesion we are currently enjoying.

“It is my firm belief that this will help us leap-frog our development agenda, we are a peace loving people and shall, therefore, leave nothing to chance," he added.

Planning

The overlord also called on the government and state institutions to appropriately plan land use in the major cities in the North East Region to attract potential investors, adding that, "our communities are in disarray and need proper planning."

He reiterated that the quest for the North East Region was for the purpose of promoting the development of the area and that the age-long traditions of the area would remain unchanged.
