The training, organised by the Business Advisory Centre of the National Board for Small Scale Industries (NBSSI), was an initiative to empower the women to grow their businesses into large-scale enterprises.

The women were trained in the production of shampoo, hair conditioners, hair food, hair oil and detergents from local materials, particularly herbs.

Support from NBSSI

The NBSSI paid for 80 per cent of the total cost of the one-week training, while the beneficiaries bore 20 per cent of the cost of the programme.

The training programme is part of the business development services by the Rural Enterprises Programme, which is being undertaken in collaboration with municipal/district assemblies and the NBSSI to assist vulnerable groups.

At a graduation ceremony in Wa, the Upper West Regional Manager of the NBSSI, Mr Many Bashir, said the project was in line with the core function of the NBSSI, through its Business Advisory Centre, to provide employment for women.

The Head of the Business Advisory Centre of NBSSI in the Wa Municipality, Mr Mohammed Abdul-Moomin, said officials from his outfit would regularly visit the shops of the beneficiaries for routine monitoring of their progress and to counsel them on relevant matters to sustain their businesses.

He urged the women to produce high quality hair products that could compete with established foreign brands.
