It is as a result of this that all the necessary facilities and infrastructure will have to be made available for the realisation of the objective of producing quality human resources to drive national development efforts.

Over the years, a number of institutions have offered education to Ghanaian children throughout the country.

One of the institutions that has distinguished itself in doing that is the Techiman Senior High School (SHS) in the Bono East Region.

It is an institution that has set as its target, not only to deliver education to Ghanaian children, but to shape their lives, build their confidence and prepare them adequately for tertiary education and for life in general.

This is to ensure that as and when they come out of school, they would be well-baked and grounded to excel in the fields they would find themselves.

The school indeed believes in the holistic development for youngsters that pass through it to enable them to fit well into society and contribute to the development of the country.

This is to ensure that they bring pride not only to themselves but their families and school.

Double track

The Techiman SHS is one of the schools in the country that runs the double track system that was introduced to cater for the large number of students that select the school.

The mixed second cycle school, with a boarding facility for males and female, currently has a total population of 3,279 students.

The total staff, both teaching and non-teaching, stands at 234.

With the motto of NIHIL NISI OPTIMUM” (in Latin, meaning NOTHING BUT THE BEST), it is also christened “SUPER TESS”.

History

The Techiman SHS was officially established on November 1, 1963 as one of the schools that was built through Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s Ghana Education Trust Schools policy with the support from the then Omanhene of Techiman, Nana Kwakye Ameyaw II.

The first headmaster of the school was A.V Acquah, with a student’s enrolment of 71, comprising 53 boys and 18 girls.

Throughout the years, the school has produced prominent personalities who have played various roles in the country, including the fields of politics, sports, media, chieftaincy, law, academia, business, health and the security services, among others.

Notable among them are Prof. Augustine Kwasi Fosu (Senior Research Fellow, Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research, University of Ghana) and Justina Owusu Banahene (Bono Regional Minister), Nana Afari Minta (Chief of Chiraa).

Others are the Member of Parliament for Tano South, Dr Benjamin Yeboah Sekyyere, Benjamin Yaw Gyarko (Municipal Chief Executive –Techiman Municipal Assembly), Prof. Joe Mensah (York University, Canada), Kwame Ntow Fianko, Major General (rtd) Opoku Adusei (Former Chief of Army Staff); Dr Clement Oppong (Korle Bu Teaching Hospital), Rose Gyimah Brempong (Immediate Past Senior Vice-President, Bank of America, USA), ACP Annor Arhin (Ashanti-North Regional Commander), Emmanuel Kwasi Anyimadu (Former Clerk of Parliament of Ghana), among others.

The headmaster of the school, Gabriel Ofosu-Mensah, told the Daily Graphic that 60 years in the life of a school like the Techiman SHS was quite monumental as a lot had been done over the years.

However, he said the school was bedevilled with a lot of challenges, and that top of the agenda was the road network in the school, which were not in good shape.

“Apart from that the existing facilities need serious renovation.

Aside from that we lack a lot of infrastructure such as dormitories for boys and girls, classrooms, and on a more serious note pieces of furniture,” he said.

Input

Making an input to the issue, the Assistant Head in charge of Administration of the school, Eunice Owusuaa Ababio, said the construction of at least two storey dormitory facilities for both male and female students would be ideal to deal with the congestion in the school.

She said the large number of students was having a lot of stress on the limited facilities in the school and cited the place of convenience as an example.

A host of activities were lined up to climax the 60th anniversary celebrations.

The celebrations began from April 28, 2023 and is expected to end with a grand durbar and thanksgiving ceremony on November 11 and 12, 2023 respectively.

The Speaker for the occasion would be Prof. Augustine Kwasi Fosu while the Guest Speaker will be the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Other guests include the Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum; the Omanhene of Techiman Traditional Council and also a Council of State Member, OseadeƐyɔ Nana Akumfi Ameyaw IV; the MP for Techiman South, Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah, and the MCE of the Techiman Municipality, Benjamin Gyarko.

The celebration is on the theme: “TESS @ 60; Delivering quality education for life in our challenging society.

The role of stakeholders.”
