Presentation

Presenting the books to the school, the organising secretary of the group Mr Ayeriga Azeriya, on behalf of the President of the year group, Mr Mark Awiah, said the recent performance of the school was a major source of worry to all stakeholders and that urgent steps were needed to address the situation.

He said although the school was relatively peaceful and achieved successes in other disciplines, there were still some challenges confronting it leading to abysmal WASSCE records of late.

In view of this, Mr Azeriya noted, the 1989 Year Group, popularly known as the ‘O’ Batch, met and took a decision to partly restock the school’s library with relevant textbooks to enable the students to have access to learning materials in their fields of study.

He expressed optimism that the students would use the books and attain academic laurels that would turn the fortunes of the school around.

He advised the students to desist from spending their time on social media such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram among others but instead, study hard to pass their examinations as well as build their self-esteem, creativity and social awareness.

Appreciation

The Headmaster of the school, Mr Ababu Afelibeik, who received the items expressed gratitude to the year group for the support and said it would ultimately promote effective academic work and improve on students’ performance.

He said the government only supplied core subjects textbooks to schools and as a result, students always found it difficult to get access to relevant textbooks of elective subjects due to the extreme poverty situation of some parents.

Mr Afelibeik further explained that some parents were also reluctant to buy the textbooks due to high illiteracy rate on their part as they did not understand the importance of educating their children.

The headmaster stated that there was the need to encourage and support the education of their children in order for them to contribute significantly to the development of the region and the country as a whole.

Mr Afelibeik indicated that the school, which has a student population of over 2,000, was faced with infrastructural and logistical challenges and, therefore, appealed to the group and other year groups to assist the school to solve some of the challenges so as to build on the successes the school was noted for.

The Girls' Prefect of the school, Ms Olivia Somtim Tobigpoka, pledged on behalf of her mates to use the textbooks to improve on their academic performance, especially at the WASSCE level.
