Accra Academy advocates for ICT based education

A former student of Accra Academy School, Dr Solomon N. K. Fixon-Owoo, has stressed the need to rely more on Information and Communications Technology (ICT) as the key medium of teaching and learning in schools to improve on the quality of tuition.

Dr Fixon-Owoo, who was the guest speaker at the 86th Speech and Prize-giving Day of Accra Academy, added that ICT was the way to go in teaching and learning since the trend of the classroom and textbook-based educational system was becoming more and more outdated.

“By incorporating these technological trends into the educational system, a higher quality education can be provided at a cheaper cost and spread over a larger segment of the population,” he said.

Accra Academy as part of its 86th Anniversary Speech and Prize-giving Day celebration emphasised the need for ICT in education. The event, held on the theme, ‘Making Secondary Education Relevant -- The Role of Information and Communication Technology’ was sponsored by the 1986 Year Group.

Delivering the keynote address, Dr Fixon-Owoo said: “The traditional paradigm in education is giving way to a new paradigm in which Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) enhance the teaching-learning process.”

Infrastructure challenges

The Group Committee Chairman of the Bleoo ’86, Bleoobi Nii Adotey Mingle, commented on the infrastructure challenges the school faced.

He said, “When an Accra Academy Alumnus enters the school and spends just five minutes looking round, it dawns on you that most structures have remained unchanged. The government alone cannot be left to do all and this is where as an alumnus, you ask yourself what you can do for your Alma Mater.”

The ’86 Year Group settled on supporting an ICT centre for the school as it had an impact on the lives of everybody in society.

86th Speech Day

The Chairman of the Board of Governors of the school, Mr Wilson Tei, reiterated that the Speech and Prize-giving Day was a time to take stock, reflect on the school’s challenges and achievements, honour those who had assisted the school’s activities and finally recognise students who had excelled to serve as encouragement to others.

The Headmaster, Mr Samuel Ofori-Agyei, in a report, recounted the projects, scholarships, professional advice and financial support. He commended the Bleoo ’86 Group for providing a fully equipped 100-seater computer laboratory for the school.

The occasion was also used by Bleoo ’86 Group, the sponsors of the event, to honour one of its members, Group Captain Joshua Mensah-Larkai, who was the Commanding Officer of the UN Operations in Cote d’Ivoire (UNOCI) GHAV.19.

He was also the Parade Commander of the 60th Anniversary Independence Day Parade at the Black Square on March 6, 2017.
