The College of Technology Education of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW-COLTEK), has trained 148 instructors from the country’s technical institutions under its Competency-based Training (CBT).

The instructors will in turn prepare artisans for the smooth take-off of the government’s one district, one factory programme.

The 148 graduating students with diploma certificates at the 21st congregation of the College in Kumasi are to produce the intellectual, technical and skilled manpower required for competitive economic growth and development for the country.

In 2013, the government of Ghana, in collaboration with the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (COTVET), embarked on the Development of Skills for Industry Project (DSIP) to address the deficiencies in the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in the country.

Subsequently, the college was mandated to train technical and vocational teachers at all levels of education in the country and also to conduct research and disseminate knowledge and contribute to TVET policy formulation and development.

Upgrade

As the only campus selected to partner COTVET to execute the project, the university was to upgrade five faculty staff to doctor of philosophy (PhD) level who are all at various levels of completion, 20 faculty members to master’s level, 150 instructors to technical institutions of which the 148 graduates are part.

The acting Vice-Chancellor of the UEW, Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni, urged the pioneering graduates to help accelerate the country’s economic emancipation.

“A lot of responsibilities have been placed on your shoulders as technical and vocational training instructors to help bring relief to the developmental and training challenges in the TVET sector,” he charged them.

Council

In a speech read on his behalf by the Executive Director of COTVET, Dr Fred Kyei Asamoa, the Minister of Education, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh, said the CBT would continue to develop demand-driven and industry-led programmes to generate occupational standards and curriculum for skill delivery.

“This, we believe, will facilitate the training of skilful and competent personnel required by industry and institutions for economic development,” he said.
