The event, which was spiced with choreographic performances, was attended by hosts of children and pupils of nine schools that have Junior Graphic Fun Clubs.

Other activities at the fair were face painting, games and bouncy castles.

Different types of food were served the children, some of whom were accompanied by their teachers or parents.

Meandering queues were formed at the Perfecto Noodles and the Samsung stands, where the children were served free cooked noodles and given customised Samsung T-shirts respectively.

The participating schools included United Family Academy, Happy Kids School, Perpetual Help School, Rene Education Centre and Trinity Academy.

Others were FRUS Academy, Emmanuel Excellence Academy, King and Queen International School and Acropolis School, as well as First Class Montessori Lyceum.

Message to the children

Mr Peter Akyea, the Greater Accra Regional Director, Department of Children of the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, who was the guest speaker at the event, told the schoolchildren to cultivate the habit of reading to enhance their performance.

He advised them not to engage in negative activities and tasked parents to monitor the mental and behavioural developments of their wards.

Editor of Junior Graphic

In an interview, Mrs Mavis Kitcher, the Editor of the Junior Graphic, said the funfair was organised for the children to de-stress before they started the term’s work.

“This particular fair was for 2013 and we shall organise the fair for 2014 in November this year,” she said.

She said activities held last year for the fun clubs in schools nationwide were a spelling competition and a national essay competition.

Mrs Kitcher said management of Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL), publisher of the Junior Graphic, had periodically sought sponsorship from corporate institutions to distribute free copies of the paper to deprived schools and pupils and mentioned Standard Chartered Bank as having supported that exercise.

Currently, she said Price and Pierce Corporation, a Swedish paper producing company had provided $15, 322 for a year’s supply of the Junior Graphic to selected deprived schools throughout the country.

Mrs Kitcher said a team from Junior Graphic visited the Junior Graphic clubs every term to interact with them to receive feedback from the children.

For 2014, she said Junior Graphic would organise reading clinics and long vacation camps for the children, explaining that the objective was not just to publish a paper for children but to also build a relationship with them.

Views on the event

Mr Reynolds Ampadu of FRUS Academy, in a chat with the Daily Graphic, described the funfair as successful and commended the organisers for a well-organised fair.

Harrison Ofori, a pupil of the First Class Montessori Lyceum, described the fair as interesting and entertaining.

He called on the organisers to introduce more games in the next fair.

Award winners

In the various competitive games, FRUS Academy, United Family Academy and Acropolis schools won the table tennis, basketball and the lime and spoon competitions respectively.

The Emmanuel Excellence Academy were the soccer champions and United Family Academy won the volleyball.
