EDITORIAL: Make the best of the opportunity

It is this time of year once again when all final-year students in senior high schools (SHSs) in the country have to give account of themselves as they write the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Obviously, this year’s examination is a peculiar one, as two batches of SHS students are writing it —  the last batch of four-year and the first batch of three-year SHS students.

This means that the examination will be very competitive, especially since the number of vacancies in tertiary institutions has not increased enough to absorb all candidates who will qualify.

It is very likely that a large number of candidates who will perform creditably will have some difficulty securing admission to universities and tertiary institutions of their choice.

The current situation, therefore, calls for seriousness on the part of every candidate writing the WASSCE, whether he or she undertook the course in three or four years.

Once the examining body — the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) — is aware of the syllabus for all candidates, there is no need for anyone to panic because the examination will be based on the agreed syllabus.

What is expected of all candidates at this time is that they should map out strategies to ensure that they adequately cover all the weak subject areas, so that they can perform creditably even in those subjects.

The best step to take now is to study according to a planned timetable and ensure that no subject is left out or given less attention because it is a difficult or an easy one.

Each subject is very important, since an excellent performance in each one of them will pave the way for admission to any tertiary institution of your choice in the country.

We wish all candidates writing the WASSCE well and encourage them to take each paper seriously because this is an opportunity they do not have to miss in life.

This opportunity will be the springboard to enable them to soar to greater heights in life and make their future remarkable.

Each candidate should make the best of this opportunity.
