Happy, Prosperous 2020

Finally, the year 2019 has come to an end and so soon we are in the year 2020, with all its expectations and promises.

For the next 364 days or so, we (the citizenry) will have to make timely decisions that will impact positively on our lives and the nation as we go through the 2020 journey.

The end of each year is a time for sober reflections and stock-taking for many citizens. Such evaluations are deemed necessary, as they give us the opportunity to reflect and think about where we have come from and where and which direction we are going as a country.

Not too long ago, this country was talking about Vision 2020 and the economic heights we were hoping to achieve. Sad to say, the economic goals envisaged have not been achieved.

There is the need for a retrospective review of the past in our quest for change and improvement. That is why we find the call by the General Overseer of the Living Streams International, Rev. Dr Ebenezer S. Maama Markwei, for Ghanaians, in particular, and those who went through a very challenging 2019 to learn to shut the door to pain, disappointment and all the bad things that happened very instructive.

In a New Year message, Rev. Dr Markwei said: “The year 2020 offers prospects. It is a destiny-changing year, but that can only be achieved through hard work, hope and discipline.”

Indeed, the 2019 journey has come and gone with its own challenges, but the advice by Rev. Dr Markwei that hanging on to the past blocks one’s opportunity to embrace new chances cannot be taken lightly.

It is only by so doing that we can consider 2020 as a year that offers Ghanaians the opportunity to take important lessons from the immediate past to improve upon their lives for the future.

The Daily Graphic notes that this year also happens to be an election year and the Ghanaian electorate will once again make delicate political choices whose outcomes will define the change in destiny we all desire.

While it will be necessary for the electorate to critically evaluate the choices available before deciding on who they will vote for, since those choices have implications, politicians should also have a renewal of the mind and seek peace and unity at all times during the electioneering.

We have gone through elections over the years, some of which have been touted globally as some of the best organised in the sub-region, and we cannot afford to drop or lower the guard.

So far, we have lived peacefully together as one people with a common destiny. After over 25 years of multi-party democracy, we want to believe that the Ghanaian electorate is very mature to make informed choices.

We must continue along this path and avoid anything that can cause disaffection and disunity. We should not let politics divide us. After all, leadership comes from God.

We note the messages of peace that were preached during New Year’s Day. The Superintendent Minister of the Resurrection Methodist Church, Adenta in Accra, the Very Rev. Andrew Mbeah-Baiden, for instance, urged Ghanaians to be at peace with the state.

The Daily Graphic joins him to say that if we are at peace with the state, we will honour our tax obligations, adhere to sanitation bye-laws and do what will make the country progress.

As we thank God for ushering us into 2020 and ask for his guidance as we travel through the New Year, may all Ghanaians experience new happiness, new goals and new achievements.

On behalf of our board, management and the entire working staff of the Graphic Communications Group Limited, we wish all Ghanaians, particularly our loyal readers, a Happy and Prosperous New Year.
