Bayern already planning lavish celebration for Champions League

Arjen Robben, Bayern Munich wingerBayern Munich’s lavish party planning for the Champions League final at Wembley tomorrow suggests they do not envisage being beaten by Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund.

The Bundesliga champions have booked the Great Room in the Grosvenor House Hotel with a buffet for 1,800 people and a bar extension to 5a.m.

They would do well to remember they have lost three of their last four finals, including last season's showpiece in their own city and stadium against Chelsea.

Clearly, Bayern haven't learned from that occasion, when the sombre mood at their meant-to-be party at Munich's Postpalast hall was only matched by the streets outside, where the main road was closed for a parade.

Instead of wild celebrations around the city, Germans wallowed in silence with the centre of Munich almost deserted save for the jubilant travelling English fans.

Bayern also fell foul of Manchester United as part of Sir Alex Ferguson's famous treble in 1999, and lost to another treble-winner, Jose Mourinho —then coach of Inter Milan, in 2010.

The only final they have won in the Champions League's current format came in 2001, when they beat Valencia on penalties at Milan's San Siro.

The Great Room — one of the largest ballrooms in Europe — was originally built as an ice rink, and the Queen learned to skate there when she was seven years old.

It was converted into an events room in 1935 although the machinery used for rink still lies underneath the floor.

During World War II, it was used to entertain officers and became the US officers' mess with General Eisenhower - a future president — and General Patton regular visitors.  -
