GJA appoints committee for next elections

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has appointed a four-member elections committee to conduct the association’s national and regional executive elections scheduled for March 8, 2013.

The members are Mr Benedict Assorow, the Director of Communications at Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM), who will chair the committee; Mrs Betty Apau-Opong of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC); Nana Kodjo Jehu-Appiah of the Ghana News Agency and Mrs Marian Kyei of KAB Governance Consult.

A press statement signed by the General Secretary of the association, Mr Bright Blewu, indicated that the nomination of candidates for national executive positions would open on Monday, January 14, 2013 and close at 5 p.m. on Thursday, February 28, 2013.

According to Article 47 of the GJA Constitution, only members of the association in good standing, other than affiliates, students and honorary members shall have the right to vote.

A list of members in good standing will be published in at least one selected daily newspaper by Friday, February 8, 2013 and only GJA ID cards will be accepted as voter identity card at the elections.

“Candidates who will vie for any of the executive positions shall be full members of the association for at least five years and must be in good standing at least 90 days before elections,” the statement said.

It said the nomination of a candidate for a national executive position should be made by two members in good standing, both of whom should not come from the same media organisation.

The nomination fees for the position of President is GH¢150; Vice-President, GH¢120; General Secretary, GH¢120; Organising Secretary, GH¢100; Treasurer, GH¢100; Public Affairs Officer, GH¢100.

In the case of regional branch elections, the nomination fee for the position of regional chairperson is GH¢50, while other regional branch positions will attract GH¢25.

The association directed that the nomination of candidates, together with the requisite fees in cash or bankers’ draft in the name of the GJA, should be filed through the GJA Elections Committee, Ghana International Press Centre, P.O. Box GP4636, Accra on or before Thursday, February 28, 2013.

“As required by the Constitution of the GJA, a three-member elections dispute adjudication committee will in due course be established by the Elections Committee,” the statement added.

The elections committee would, in consultation with regional branch executives, appoint an elections officer for each region to organise elections for new regional executives alongside those of national executives on the same day, it said.
