COVID19: Rotary Club supports health practitioners with PPEs

The Ghana Rotary Club International has donated Personal Protective Equipment(PPE) to the Ghana Association of Doctors in Residency (GADOR) to facilitate the fight against the spread of COVID-19.

The items which are estimated to cost GHS100,000 included hand sanitiser, nose masks, protective eye shields, surgical gloves, coveralls and soaps.

The Co-chairman of the COVID-19 Rotarians Response Team, Dr Akwei Addo said the gesture was in line with the club’s key areas of focus which included disease prevention and control.

Support

He said the group realised that in the wake of the outbreak of COVID-19 in the country, there was a shortage of the PPEs in the country and frontline workers in the fight against the virus were also exposed to the risk of contracting the disease.

“When we heard this we were very much worried so we decided to come together as an associate to find solutions to the challenge, we were able to mobilise some funds from our members and other friends of the association and we came up with this items,” he said.

“This is not the end, we will continue to render our support to other frontline workers and even contribute to the COVID-19 national fund to ensure this disease is fought well and everyone is safe,” Mr Addo added.

Shortage of PPEs

The General Secretary of GADOR, Dr Florence Akumiah who received the items on behalf of the association commended the club for their kind gesture.

“This means a lot to us because most of our members are still working without any protection, there was a shortage of such products in the market and government supply was also delaying, we are happy that people are coming in to help us,” she said.

“Most of our members have already been infected and are on quarantine, we have to curb this situation because if it persists and we are all being sent to quarantine, there wouldn’t be anyone to help fight this outbreak,” she stressed.

Dr Akumiah further called for other corporate organisations and philanthropist to also support them with more PPEs to help boost the confidence of the frontline workers to help eliminate the pandemic.
