UNESCO Director General pays courtesy call on President Mahama

President John Mahama and the Director General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, during their meeting.President John Mahama has requested the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to support Ghana with its technical expertise and support to develop Ghana's world heritage sites and other tourism potentials.

Speaking during a courtesy call by the Director General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova in the Flagstaff House on Monday, President Mahama said the development of the heritage sites would help preserve the national heritage for posterity and also promote the country's tourist attractions.  

The sites include the Osu, Cape Coast & Elmina Castles, the Larabanga Mosque and the Salaga Slave Markets in the Northern Region, Gwollu Slave Wall and the Nakore Mosque in the Upper West Region.

The President also announced that government is working to revamp the technical and vocational education system to produce more middle-level human resource, to help reduce the unemployment rate by creating more entrepreneurs.

He commended UNESCO for supporting developing countries to achieve their development targets, and gave the assurance that the Government of Ghana will continue to partner the Organisation to achieve its goals.

The UNESCO Director General is on a 3-day visit to Ghana. She is the first female head of the Group, and a former Bulgarian Foreign Minister.
