The Greater Accra and Ashanti regions are likely to be migrated from analogue to digital terrestial television (DTT) by December this year, a Deputy Minister of Communications, Mr Ato Sarpong, has said.

He said the pace at which contractors assigned to work on the country’s migration to DTT was such that the two regions might beat the March 2016 deadline set for Ghana’s migration to DTT.

Mr Sarpong made this known at the ninth Gong Gong Awards in Accra last Saturday.

The event was organised by the Advertising Association of Ghana (AAG) to honour its members who had excelled in their work in the past year.

The theme for the awards was: “Digital Migration: The prospects and challenges for the advertising industry and practitioners.”

Analogue to digital

Mr Sarpong said the migration from analogue to digital television broadcasting would have an impact on individuals, considering the pervasiveness of terrestrial television.

He explained that his outfit was managing the process to ensure that every Ghanaian who watched TV would be able to continue watching TV on the digital platform.
“Broadcasters need to be critical in ensuring quality, innovation and creativity in content that will sustain the attention of its viewers,” he said.

Call on advertisers

Mr Sarpong encouraged advertisers to consider their audience and the environment where they operated to meet the terrestrial video digital transmission standard adopted by Ghana.

He urged them to stick to industry standards to ensure that cultural sensitivity was developed locally to promote content for their clients.

“Advertisers should make use of the variety of channels to compete with their counterparts in other parts of the globe,” he said.

Awards

The awards were categorised into different schemes, including special awards, hospitality, corporate and financial institution awards.

Four advertising firms were given the Platinum award which represented the overall performance in the categories of radio, television, out-of-home media and print.

The overall winner in radio advertising was Innova DDB, while Insel Communications won in the television category.

For out-of-media advertising, Scanad Advertising emerged the winner, with the award in print going to Rezuiltz Advertising.

The Creative Director of SCANAD Ghana, Ms Yaa Boateng, whose firm won the overall Platinum for outdoor media and other awards, commended the Ministry of Communications for its pace in trying to reach the target of migrating from analogue to digital television, adding, “It will unearth our potential to improve on quantity and quality in the advertising industry.”
