Mile 7 Police gets Female Cells

A construction firm, WBHO Ghana, builders of the Achimota Retail Mall, has rehabilitated the Achimota Mile 7 Police Station and provided a separate female cell for it.

The female cell will accommodate 25 inmates and has washroom facilities.

In addition, the construction company has renovated the male cell to enable it accommodate 40.

Originally, the male call did not have any sanitary facility and could only accommodate 15 inmates.

Speaking after a tour of the new facility, the District Commander of the Mile 7 District Police, Superintendent of Police, Theodore Hlormenu, said the new facility would help solve the shortage of cells, especially for accommodating female inmates.

In the past, he said shortages of cells had led to people arrested in the jurisdiction having to be transferred to other police stations.

He was optimistic that the new development would improve the work of the police and bring more offenders to justice because there would be more capacity to hold offenders.

Mr Hlormenu said the district sent a request to WBHO Ghana to assist with the renovation of the station’s male cell and reconstruction of a female cell for the Mile 7 community.

He also said the decision was taken following the construction of the Achimota Mall, which had the potential of increasing the crime rate in the area.

“Female suspects arrested in this community have no cell here.

With the expansion of the male cell and provision of a female cell, he said, “the inconvenience and risk involved in transporting a suspect to other police stations for safety is over.”

After commending WBHO Ghana for the support, Mr Hlormenu called on corporate institutions to assist the Mile 7 police by providing an office for the district.

“Our district office is a bungalow that has been converted into offices. The hall accommodating the investigators is very small and this has compelled some of the investigators to use a container as their office,” he said.

Handing the new cells over to the Mile 7 Police district commander, the WBHO Site Manager in charge of the Achimota Mall, Mr Kyle Nixon, said the support was part of the company’s corporate social responsibility.

He said the company saw the need to provide a female cell for the police as part of their community development projects.

Later, the Tesano Divisional Police Commander, Chief superintendent of Police, Kwesi Arhin, and the Tesano Divisional Police Crime Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Kyereme, were taken round the cells and Mile 7 Police Station.

The Mile 7 District Police Command is under the jurisdiction of the Tesano Divisional Police Command.
