Marcus Rashford — Man United’s new teenage goal machine

He is currently the new teenage sensation in the English Premier League (EPL). No wonder, the name Marcus Rashford is on the lips of keen followers of the EPL, having been roped into the first team of Manchester United.

In two successive high profile matches, Rashford, 18, has scored four goals so far. In his first match on February 25, 2016, Rashford became the Red Devils youngest ever scorer in European football when he bagged two goals against FC Midtjylland in the Europa League.

He then repeated that feat against Arsenal in the EPL in front of 75,000 fans at Old Trafford in his debut Premier League appearance.

The teenage goal machine made his debut for United after Anthony Martial suffered a hamstring injury in a warm up ahead of the club’s match against FC Midtjylland.

Rashford was born on October 31, 1997 at Manchester. He is a striker and joined United on July 1, 2014.

He attends the Ashton on Mersey School where he is expected to complete his Advanced Level course this year.

Rashford began playing football for Fletcher Moss Rangers at the age of five and joined the academy system at Manchester United at the age of seven.

After helping United retain the Milk Cup in 2014, he became the main man in attack when Demetri Mitchell was sidelined through injury. Learning all the time in a centre-forward role, he regularly showed glimpses of his quality and finished as top scorer with 13 goals from 25 matches.

His magnificent free-kick in the FA Youth Cup defeat at Tottenham illustrated his prowess from set-pieces.

A shock inclusion as a lone striker in the FA Youth Cup tie at Leicester City in 2013/14 saw him perform on the big stage and he did not let anybody down in an unfamiliar position.

Perhaps, more comfortable operating in the hole between midfield and attack, the Manchester-born starlet managed to hold down a pretty regular place towards the end of that campaign.

Foundation coach Dave Chapman was one of the first to come into contact with the striker.

‘You could see from the beginning that there was something there,’ he said.

‘At this point, he was already involved with the Manchester United Academy but we weren’t aware; he never mentioned it, he just turned up to play.

‘You see players who play for clubs at the weekends and they turn up to evening sessions and just watch because they don’t want to get injured but Marcus was always fully involved.
