‘Invest in arts, sculpture industry’

The Director of the Centre for National Culture (CNC), in Kumasi, Mr Eric Tei Matey, has advised students to see artworks and sculpturing as serious professions which could  offer  solutions to the country’s unemployment problems.

He expressed disappointment at the attitudes of students who think artwork and entrepreneurship is a last resort to getting employment and not necessarily a career development path.

Mr Matey was advising students of the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Senior High School at Bekwai in the Ashanti Region during an educational tour of the CNC.

He said it was time students dismissed the erroneous impression that producing artworks and pursuing other technical subjects were for dropouts.

He expressed regret at the rate that students abandon  their God-given talents in pursuit of subjects which end up making them unemployable after school.

He urged parents to guide their children to make informed choices rather than impose professions on them.

A sculptor himself, Mr Matey said it was his love for  producing artworks that had made him what he had attained in life.

According to him, the artworks industry was an asset explaining that if professionals engaged in the craft are provided the required support the country's fortunes would be turned around.

He identified the lack of galleries for artists as a major challenge hindering the industry, and called for this problem to be addressed.

Mr Matey appealed to the corporate world as well as philanthropists to invest in the industry.
