The Mirror has become the latest media organisation to join the coalition seeking to vigorously promote domestic tourism.

This brings to four, the number of prominent promotional organisations making up the ‘Tourism Marketing Alliance Ghana’ (TMAG) whose flagship project, “See Ghana” organises scheduled monthly excursions and weekend road trips to attractions and destinations in all 10 regions.

Together with the others that make up TMAG, namely, Joy 99.7FM, Joy Prime on MultiTV and destination management firm, Bentsifi, the “See Ghana” excursions aims to encourage residents of Accra to make a conscious effort to visit as many of the various heritage and tourist attractions in the country as possible.

This, it is hoped, will kindle great interest domestic tourism, which is a major stimulation for the development of local communities and the economy.

Over the Easter, the first “See Ghana” weekender for 2016 saw some 14 punters joining the tour wagon on the ‘Highland Affair’ excursion, which toured the Kwahu highlands.

Patrons visited the site for the popular annual Paragliding Festival on the top of the Kwahu ridge at Atibie, where they undertook a trek down the mountain to explore some caves.

From the height, they had incredibly spectacular views of the lower lying Nkwakaw and other townships.

Driving through the busy reveling towns of the highlands, the wagon took the group to the Butuase waterfalls in Tafo, where they set up camp and had a hearty barbecue lunch.

From there, they moved to their lodging for the night, the fabulous Beige Village Spa & Golf Resort in New Aberim.

The following day, they enjoyed another expedition, prearranged by the Kwahu Tourism Initiative to the ‘Nkofieho Warrior Caves’, which centuries ago, was the hiding place for the indigenes during warring times with Ashanti.

Here, the group hiked up a short hill before entering the dark, narrow caves wearing headlamps and maneuvering to exit through another outlet.

Finishing this expedition gave the group a true sense of achievement, hiking up and making it through the very narrow caves. Each one of them came out with their own exciting experience and story!

After more sightseeing, stopping at the monument in Abetifi, recording the community as the highest habitable point in Ghana, the wagon returned to Accra, with participants expressing excitement for taking part and learning that there is far more to the Kwahu highlands than mere Easter revelry and an annual Paragliding festival.

Tour operators Native Adventures – “the WangoWango people”, execute the ‘See Ghana’ tours, and are run under the patronage of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts.
