The team qualified for the tournament by virtue of winning last season’s male and female Greater Accra Volleyball League.

However with less than two months to participate in the eight day competition which climaxes on May 28 in Tunis, Ghana’s sole participants El Wak Wings are unable to raise funds to enable them compete in the tournament.

“We are well prepared for the tournament but we don’t have the funds for tickets and accommodation, we are appealing to corporate Ghana to come to our aid and secure us a ticket and some stipends,” Mr Divine Edem Dotse, the manager of the club told the Daily Graphic in an interview at the team’s training ground at the El Wak Sports Stadium in Accra.

He noted that it would be a shame for the volleyball community in the country if Ghana has no representative at the tournament and appealed to the Youth and Sports Ministry and the National Sports Authority to support their cause.

“The Ghana Volleyball Association doesn’t have the financial muscle to help us, so we are appealing to the Ministry and corporate bodies to support us to take part in the tournament,” he stated.

Mr Dotse revealed that the team is poised to win the competition if it is able to make it to Tunisia adding that they have improved their technical bench.

“We have improved our technical bench since last year, we have in our stock a former national team coach and a former player to augment our technical department,” he stated.

Meanwhile the Ghana Volleyball Association (GVA) has sent a goodwill to the El Wak Wings team ahead of their participation in the Africa Clubs Championships.

Mr George Tettey, the president of the association told the Daily Graphic that the team will definitely perform creditably well at the tournament.

“El Wak is the first civilian team to participate in this competition, and they took the league by storm, they will cause a shocker in Tunisia,” he stated.
