Amateur boxing boss must quit — Patterson

Renowned boxing match-maker, Ako Patterson, has called for the resignation of the president of the Ghana Amateur Boxing Federation, Gideon Quartey, and further demanding an overhaul of the federation.

He contended that the federation had suffered under Quartey’s supervision which ultimately led to the elimination of the Black Bombers in the Olympics qualifiers in Cameroun last month.

In an interview with the Graphic Sports, Mr Patterson expressed surprise at the seeming calm on the amateur boxing front despite the disgraceful exit of the Black Bombers from the Olympics.

“I am surprised Quartey is going about his normal work and blowing his own horn when he should have stepped down by now or fired,” he stated.

The veteran manager called for a swift election to ensure a progressive amateur boxing development.

According to Patterson, he was totally dissatisfied with the poor management of amateur boxers in the country and, therefore, called for a change.

For the first time in 20 years the Black Bombers failed to qualify for the upcoming Olympics in Rio in August.

Even though an opportunity exists for the Bombers to make it to the summer Games through the Azerbaijan qualifiers, Mr Patterson believed the Bombers had lost it already.

Meanwhile, Quartey has rubbished the claims made by Patterson, desribing him as a hypocrite who was quick to praise him (Gideon) but attacked him behind his back.
