Bawumia woos Zongos in Ashaiman, Tema East

The Vice-President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, says the government has provided the requisite infrastructure to build a new credit system to transform the country into a modern economy.

He said the credit system — which would start working from next year with the aid of the National identification (ID) cards and the digital address system — would facilitate access to credit facilities for the people.

Dr Bawumia, who continued to court the support of Zongo communities as part of his four-day tour of the Greater Accra Region, told the chiefs and people of Ashaiman and the Tema East constituencies yesterday that the government had initiated a number of projects such as the expansion of the automotive industry to help as many commercial drivers as possible to have access to new vehicles.

“Government is also coming up with a new policy to enable Free SHS students who qualified for tertiary institutions to have easy access to loans which they will pay through the credit system with the aid of their national ID cards.

“People who cannot afford their rent advance will also be assisted with loans by government to rent a room and pay through the credit system,” he explained and asked the people to vote for the NPP parliamentary candidate for the Ashaiman constituency, Alhaji Labaran Yakubu Barry, and retain President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in power to continue with those well thought through policies.

Dr Bawumia said the President was working to transform the country into the Dubai of West Africa where people would come and buy cars.

Visits

The Vice-President first called on the regent of Ashaiman, Nii Annan Ajor, where he commended him for his stewardship.

In the company of the MP for Tema East, Mr Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover, he visited the Tema Traditional Council in the Tema East Constituency after which he inspected works at the newly constructed Tema New Town Sports Complex. He later interacted with a charged crowd of fishmongers at the Tema Fishing Harbour. He also met the Muslim community at the car park of the Tema Community Centre.

Drivers of Haulage trucks also had the opportunity to interact with the Vice-President at Community One.

Briefing the regent of Ashaiman on the purpose of his visit earlier, the Vice-President described Ashaiman as very important in every political discourse in the country because the community had residents from every ethnic group in the country and in West Africa.

“My message for the people, therefore, is about development; that is what President Akufo-Addo has done and why you have to give him four more years. The way President Akufo-Addo has started, if we give him four more years he will transform the country,” Vice-President Bawumia added.

Responding to an appeal by the regent for improved roads in the Ashaiman Municipality, Vice-President Bawumia assured the chiefs and people that Ashaiman had been factored into the inner city roads and mentioned the Middle East, Tulaku and Lebanon roads as some of the roads to receive a facelift.

He also mentioned the construction of an interchange to link Ashaiman to Klagon.

Aspirant

The NPP aspiring MP for the area, Alhaji Barry, for his part, said Ashaiman needed an MP who was development-oriented to accelerate the development of the area.

The Chief of Ashaiman, Nii Annan Ajor, commended the government for the leadership it showed in the management of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said Ashaiman was grateful for the carving of the municipality but Ashaiman now looked like an orphan because of the administrative boundaries which kept denying it of revenue.

Nii Ajor appealed to the government to decongest Ashaiman through the assembly because the town was over populated.

The Spokesperson for the Zongo chiefs and Sarki of Moshie, Alhaji Abubakar Zera, expressed their love for Dr Bawumia whom he described as one of the hardworking Vice-Presidents in Ghana.
