Govt to employ 40,000 sanitation officers
Forty thousand sanitation officers are to be employed to augment the work of environmental health officers in the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources.

According to a Programme Officer of the environmental health sanitation directorate of the ministry, Mr Kweku Quansah, the officers will work under the supervision of environmental health officers to facilitate the enforcement of sanitation bye-laws.
He made this known during a workshop organised jointly by Water Aid and the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources in Accra. It was funded by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
The workshop was meant to coordinate stakeholders’ ideas on sanitation management.
The meeting was also used to launch a new knowledge-sharing platform dubbed: “Sustainable Sanitation Alliance.”
Mr Quansah said the ministry would additionally roll out a five-year strategic plan aimed at resolving waste management challenges in the country.
Collaboration
Mr Quansah stated that the government would continue to collaborate with the private sector to address the sanitation challenges facing the country.
He added that the sector handled about 80 per cent of waste management services in the country.
In an interaction with journalists, a facilitator of the programme, Mr Ibrahim Musah, urged the government to create the necessary conditions to tackle sanitation challenges.
Stakeholders at the meeting explained that poor sanitary conditions in the country could be attributed to the laxity in theenforcement of the law.
