The durbar, which will be held at the Christ Apostolic Church International at Amapabame in Kumasi, will be on the theme: “Education – The Right of the Child.”

The National Children's Day is one of the traditional calendar activities of the Department of Children, a day set aside to take stock of issues concerning children and reflect on what should be done to improve their lives.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic in an interview, the Ashanti Regional Director of the Department of Children, Pastor Stephen Darfour, said the theme had been selected to enable the department to achieve Goal Four of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which emphasises quality education.

Some of the activities that will go along with the celebration, he mentioned, were media interaction, durbar with religious institutions and a visit to the Children’s Ward of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

He said the objective of the celebration was to educate the general public on the need to ensure that every child had access to education.

He added that his colleague regional officers would join the national office of the department to celebrate the day to address the needs of children, since education was the key to national development.

Education as asset

Pastor Darfour said the government was doing all it could to meet the target of quality education, hence it was necessary for parents and guardians to also invest in the education of their children and wards, adding that education was the best asset for children in nation building.

Pastor Darfour stated that as part of moves to make the objective a reality, his department had collaborated with the Department of Social Welfare to educate Early Children Care Givers (ECCG) on children upbringing, cleanliness at home, parent-child relation, monitoring and enrolment of the child, first aid and child-friendly environment.

He, however, called on the general public to show maximum participation in the celebration of the day so as to realise the impact of quality education, since the government could not do it alone.
