He was decorated with the Chain of Office and Manual of Procedure by the Rotarian Past President of the club, Mr Anthony Osei-Poku.

Dr Kantum was also presented with a Certificate of Existence by Rotarian Past President Charles Amoako.

The Kumasi East Rotary Club has been in existence for the past 26 years and is second to the Kumasi Rotary Club which has existed for the past 64 years.

He was inducted with nine others to form the board of directors who will steer the affairs of the club for the 2017/2018 Rotary Year.

They are Messrs Richard Antwi (Secretary), George Fuseini (Treasurer), Kyeremateng Abrampah (immediate past President), Kwadwo Dei (Vice-President) and Zaccheus Donkor Nderago (Sergent-At-Arms).

The rest are Nana Ayensu Boakye (Director, Public Image), Madam Rosemond Owusu (Director, New Generations), Mr Francis Tettey (Director, Pregeets) and Mr Joseph Sarpong (Director, Club Administration).

Rotary reached out to most needy

In his acceptance speech, Rotarian President Kantum acknowledged that since its formation over 100 years ago, Rotary International had a worldwide membership of about 1.2 million and had done a lot for mankind and continued to do so.

He observed that Rotary had reached out to the most needy, most vulnerable and most deprived throughout the world.

Having joined the club two years ago with honour and humility, he said he was bent on building on what his predecessors had achieved, adding that the Kumasi East Club had contributed in no small measure to relieve the suffering of many communities in the Ashanti Region and even beyond.

He recalled that the club had embarked on several projects, including the provision of potable water, toilet facilities and teaching and learning materials to many communities and gave an assurance that plans were afoot to expand those services in the coming years.

Building effective & efficient club

Rotarian Kantum mentioned four areas through which he sought to build on the legacies of his predecessors to take the club  a step ahead of focus.

One of the areas was building an effective and efficient club which, to him, would depend largely on total involvement in activities by members.

“A comprehensive club brochure nearing completion details activities in the 2017/2018 Rotary Year. A five-year strategic plan that envisages where we want our club to be in the next five years is being developed and will be incorporated in the club brochure,” he said to buttress his point.

He also said his focus would be on membership engagement, encouraging programmes among members and improving the image of Rotary in communities.

He stated, “Rotary has done so much good in the world and for the world, yet the perception of Rotary by the public has not always been the best. Some perceive Rotary as an elitist entity only for the rich in society. As Rotarians, we must showcase Rotary within ourselves by our conduct,” he added.
