WAEC clears 130 schools of cheating

The results of all the 130 schools that were withheld by the West African Examinations Council  (WAEC) on suspicion of cheating in the 2013 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) have been released.

The Principal Public Relations Officer (PRO) of WAEC, Mrs Agnes Teye-Cudjoe, who disclosed this to the Junior Graphic, said out of the total number of 7,270 candidates from 130 schools whose results were withheld, only one of them still had the results withheld by WAEC.

She said WAEC would work around the clock to get the information on the said candidate to determine whether the results should be cancelled or released.

It would be recalled that when WAEC released the 2013 BECE provisional results in September,  out of the 391,082 candidates who wrote the examination, 7,270 candidates from 130 schools had their results withheld because of suspicion of examination malpractices.

The WAEC PRO said a series of meetings were held to determine the fate of the affected schools “and thankfully, all the schools have been cleared.”

She added that at the end of the investigations by WAEC, 63 candidates had their entire results cancelled, while 748 candidates had some individual subjects cancelled.

Mrs Teye-Cudjoe said those students who had their entire results cancelled were expected to go back to their former schools to be registered to enable them to rewrite the exam.
