GES holds STMIE camp for jhs students in Volta Region

The Volta regional office of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has held a seven-day Science, Technology, Mathematics and Innovation Education (STMIE) programme for junior high school (JHS) students from 22 districts at Sogakope in the Volta Region.

The programme, held on the theme: “STMIE — Equipping the Youth with Basic Foundational Skills for Creativity and National Development”, was aimed at aiding participants to demystify the fear of Science and Mathematics, to encourage them to study the courses, and provide insights into their career prospects.

Speaking at the closing ceremony to award talented and hardworking participants, the Volta Regional Director of Education, Ms Enyonam Afi Amafuga, said she believed the workshop had exposed the participants to leadership skills because the “importance of Science and its related subjects to the advancement and wellbeing of humanity has never been in doubt”.

Value

She said the workshop was transformational and thus urged participants to value information acquired from the programme and equally transfer knowledge to their peers.

“This workshop should be an eye opener for you, showing you how interesting science and its related courses can be. I urge you to hold onto the secrets you have been exposed to at this workshop and go back to your schools and build on them and also show them to your friends”, she added.

She said the continuous provision of platforms for the youth to comfortably pursue the science and technological courses would give them the confidence they needed in passing their examinations.

The Headmaster of Sogakope Senior High School, Mr Newman H. K. Dziedzoave, said he was optimistic the workshop would erase the phobia and perceptions attached to these fields of study.

Award

Fifteen deserving awardees out of a total of 442 participants were presented with books and certificates, of which Alice Feakpi from the Ho West District emerged the overall best participant from the workshop.

She expressed gratitude to the organisers of the programme and said “I am very excited to emerge the overall best student out of 442 students, the programme has been beneficial because I am not scared of science anymore”.

Exhibition

The participants also exhibited their innovations during the ceremony including an excavator, wooden fufu pounding machine, automobile wheelchair, an irrigation system, water light, among others.

Ms Amafuga showed gratitude to the government for giving the students the opportunity through the STMIE programme to educate themselves and showcase their talents.

She called on all organisations to come on board to develop the STMIE programme and make it more attractive.
