Review educational curricula

A non-governmental organisation (NGO) based in the Upper West Region has called for greater attention to skills training at the formal school level to develop the natural talents of boys and girls.

The Chief Executive of Social Initiative for Literacy and Development Programme (SILDEP), Mr Moses Dramani Luri, said “there is too much emphasis on literacy and numeracy at the expense of skills development and training.”

He, therefore, called for a review of the educational curricula at the various levels to train children to develop their skills and bring out the best in talented students.

Addressing some 100 basic school pupils and stakeholders at the opening of a Girls Camp in Wa in the Upper West Region, Mr Dramani Luri said skills training had become very relevant since some students eventually employed their skills after school.

“Our school leavers become hairdressers, dressmakers, beauticians, musicians, among others, yet little or no emphasis is placed on creative arts, technical, vocational and life skills education and training in the formal school right from kindergarten to the university,” he stressed.

Mr Luri said those skills were key to unlocking the development gap in the Upper West Region and Ghana at large.

Basic school girls, selected from Sissala East, Sissala West and the Wa West districts, attended the five-day Girls Camp at the Wa Senior High and Technical School.

The camp, which was organised by SILDEP, is a platform to groom leadership skills in young women and encourage them to overcome the common challenges in their surroundings.

It formed part of the activities of the Girls Advocacy Alliance, a project instituted by SILDEP in the Upper West Region since 2016 to help build the capacity of girls to enable them to champion issues in their lives.

The selected participants are expected to return to their various girls clubs to impact the knowledge and skills they have acquired in their respective schools and districts.
