Unite to fight piracy

Although we started a while ago, our film industry is still in its infancy but thankfully, there seems to be an improvement compared to previous years. However, despite the advances made, the issue of piracy is still a pervasive one that needs to be tackled urgently before it reverses the little gains chalked.

Film producer and director, Leila Djansi, recently had cause to raise concern about how much piracy is eating into the profit margins of movie producers. She also questioned why some television stations in the country blatantly screen movies which they have no rights to. Leila argues that to fight piracy, industry players must look beyond petty squabbles and feud, rather, work together to develop a permanent solution to the problem.

We at Showbiz agree wholeheartedly with Leila and offer her our full support. Why are film makers in Ghana busily fighting one another while others profit illegally off their hard work? We think there’s no need for film makers to fight over pittance while there is a fortune to be made if they work together.

Without a united front to combat piracy, it is practically impossible to put an end to the canker.

The film industry has the potential to give employment and revenue to a large number of people in the country while contributing to the economy, as evident in other parts of the world. The true test of maturity is when we are able to put aside our differences and combine our energies to work together for the common good.

Leila’s comments should serve as a wake-up call for all parties and hopefully, we might soon see an end to the piracy menace.
