Starlets’ bonus slashed from $3,000 to $1,000

The Minister of Youth and Sport, Isaac Asiamah, has revealed that the Black Starlets will receive $1,000 as winning bonus per match during the Africa U-17 Championship in Gabon.

The team’s new package was arrived at after dialogue between the ministry, the Starlets management officials and the playing body. It represents a reduction from an initial $3,000-a-match the players receive at international competitions.

The team’s new package was arrived at after dialogue between the ministry, the Starlets management officials and the playing body. It represents more than 30 percent slash from an initial $3,000-a-match the players receive at international competitions

The Starlets' new bonus structure, according to the minister, emphasises the government's commitment to cost cutting just as was done to the Black Stars, whose previous $10,000-a-match bonus was slashed by half during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign in Gabon in January.

In an interview with the Graphic Sports, Mr Asiamah noted that the Starlets departed for Gabon with all issues sorted out, including outstanding bonuses, to enable them to play their hearts out for the state.

"After dialoguing with the team, we agreed that they receive $1,000 as winning bonus per game as compared to the usual $3,000 they used to take,"  he said.

"We spoke to them for the allowance to be slashed after meetings which they agreed, so everything has been sorted out now.

"As it stands now, government has done everything to make sure they win gold for the country at the Africa Championship," the minister added.

The Starlets arrived in the Gabonese coastal city of Port Gentil last Friday for their final preparation towards the May 14-28 tournament.

Paa Kwesi Fabin’s charges — who are in Group A with hosts Gabon, Cameroun and Guinea — will open the tournament against their Cameroonian counterparts on May 14.
