Honour Nkrumah’s promise to us - Osei Kofi tells nation

Veteran footballer and one of Ghana’s representatives in the 1963 Nations Cup triumph, Rev. Osei Kofi, remains thankful to Moses Foh Amoaning for his generosity in organising a thanksgiving Service to mark the five decades after winning the Nations Cup.

Last Sunday, the former Ghana Boxing Authority boss hosted a thanksgiving prayer session at the Calvary Methodist Church in Accra for past Black Stars players whose effort had won Ghana her four Nations Cup trophies.

In attendance was the Very Rev. Theophilus Anderson, the minister-in-charge who presided and Rev. Etuah-Jackson of the church among others.

Modest as the celebration seemed, the 73-year-old believed it could have been better. “If it were to be any European country, it would have been a state function’, he said in an interview with the Graphic Sports yesterday.

The diminutive dribbler turned preacher said he was astounded by the fact that the 50th anniversary incidentally fell on a Sunday, the same day on which they won the first Cup and thanked Amoaning for the initiative.

In his disappointment for the lack of support from the state, he said even Nigerians who subsequently won the competition were rewarded with houses and cars and wondered why successive governments had failed to honour President Kwame Nkrumah’s promise since his overthrow.

‘A prophet of mine once called me and said what was happening to the Black Stars now is spiritual’ explaining that if all the past four winners were not honoured as promised, the country would not win a fifth trophy.

“Fortunately, current Youth and Sports Minister, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, has promised to compensate us” Rev. Osei Kofi said, and disagreed with critics who don’t empathise with them because they made a lot of money while playing, stressing it was their promise they were demanding.
