Rawlings denies formation of new political party

The office of former President Jerry Rawlings has denied publications that he is in league with others to form a new political party out of the opposition National Democratic Congress.

A statement by the office has therefore asked the public to ignore the claims and "treat the report with the utmost disregard and contempt."

Other stalwarts of the party - including a former Health Minister Samuel Nuamah Donkor and a former Defence Minister, Dr. Benjamin Kunbuor have been linked to the alleged formation of the supposed party, but in a tweet also making mockery of the allegation, Rawlings said Kubuor, with his high integrity, cannot be instigated to abandon the NDC, more so when he has indicated under what circumstance he would quit the party.

"Dr. Kunbuor's integrity is impeccable. He is not unknown for his courage and he needs no one to tell him how pervasive the cancer of monetary inducements has become in the party's electoral processes. He boldly said so himself so let's stop being mischievous and impervous to criticism."

Below is the statement from Rawlings' office

The attention of the office of former President Jerry John Rawlings, has been drawn to a story making the rounds on social media and some mainstream media, that he has instigated the formation of a new party; a breakaway from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The office urges the general public to treat the report with the utmost disregard and contempt.

The carefully crafted falsehood is unfortunately the creation of a small element within the NDC keen on manipulating the minds of party faithful.

This is not the first time they have attempted this kind of political trickery and falsehood. In the run up to the 2016 elections the same devious elements planted such fabrications in the media. Unfortunately they have not learnt from the party’s humiliating loss and have sharpened their arsenal for yet more fairytales.

We urge the media and social media managers to confirm such reports with this office before publication.
