Upper West female teachers complain of arbitrary transfer

Female teachers in the Upper West Region have lamented what they describe as arbitrary transfer by their superior officers, which are most often done verbally, without recourse to the properly laid down regulations of the service.

They agreed that transfers were normal procedures of employment but they should not be used to settle scores, especially as a tool “for punishing mostly female teachers.”

This, they believed, could demoralise the affected teachers in the discharge of their duties to enhance quality teaching and learning in schools.

That was contained in a five-point resolution that was read by Mr Le Roy Levi Mc Nara, Upper West Regional Secretary of the Ghana National Asociation of Teachers (GNAT), at a durbar of teachers to mark the Upper West Regional branch of GNAT’s celebration of this year's International Women's Day celebration held in Wa.

The occasion, which is set aside annually to empower women, was organised by the GNAT Ladies Society (GNAT-LAS) on the theme " Gender Democracy is Union Democracy, Strength and Unity".

Promotion of female teachers

The resolution also accused officers of the Ghana Education Service (GES) of “sitting on the promotions of female teachers”, as a way of breaking the resolve of these teachers to give in to their advances.

The teachers appealed to the government to consider providing staff accommodation at new educational institutions under construction, especially in the rural areas, since teachers faced acute accommodation challenges when transferred to serve in such deprived areas.

They also spoke about unresolved issues relating to the two-tier pension scheme and pledged to continue fighting until a solution was found.

Madam Helen Awurusah, the National Gender Coordinator of GNAT of Teachers in-charge of  the Gender Desk, encouraged  teachers, especially the females, to take advantage of the many interventions being afforded them by the government for working in deprived areas.

This include, access to further their studies, capacity building, leadership and other professional development programmes that will equip them with the requisite knowledge to enhance teaching and learning in the schools.
