Identified as Eric Opoku, the deceased was among a group of 10 workers of the company who fell into the sea after a slap on which they stood and were working on the jetty caved in.

The body of the deceased was discovered Monday morning floating beneath the new jetty being constructed at the port.

Officials of the company, according to eyewitnesses only detected the deceased had gone missing after a head count of workers at the scene of the incident.

The nine other workers were rescued by a team of marine personnel from the port.

The incident which occurred at about 2pm has brought a temporary hold up of work on the jetty.

The Marketing and Public Relations Manager at the Tema Port, Mr Paul Ansah Asare who confirmed the incident to Graphiconline said they suspect the wooden platform might have collapsed as a result of excessive weight.

According to him, the group fell into the sea while laying building pillars for the apron jetty under construction as part of the expansion project.

"What we do not know is whether the platform collapsed as a result of excessive weight or poor constructional works on it," Mr Ansah Asare noted.

The remains of the deceased have been handed over to the homicide unit of the Tema Regional Police for further investigations.

He indicated that preliminary investigations by the Port security revealed the deceased has been working with Amandi Holdings for the past two months.

Officials of Amandi Holdings are yet to publicly comment on the incident.
