Oil companies urged to submit risk preparedness plan

Companies desirous of investing in haulage in the oil sector have been called upon to prepare and submit their risk preparedness plan for accreditation to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

This is to ensure that they put in place measures that would help forestall any disaster during their operations.

The National Co-ordinator of NADMO, Mr Kofi Portuphy, made the call when a 13-member inter-disciplinary committee set up by NADMO to review the risk preparedness plan of Quantum Terminals Limited, a company involved in the haulage of Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG), presented its report to NADMO.

The committee was chaired by Professor Cyril Schandorf of the Department of Nuclear Safety and Security, University of Ghana. Other members of the committee were from the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Armed Forces, as well as experts from other organisations.

Emerging oil economy

According to Mr Portuphy, with the country’s emerging oil economy and the many investment opportunities available, there was the need for companies investing in the oil sector to comply with national and international regulations in the haulage of LPG and petroleum products.

Such plans, he said, would help to protect the community where they operated, as well as their workforce.

He said such companies should not wait for the worse to happen before they engaged in mitigation efforts, but rather they should put in place measures that would mitigate any disaster in the near future.

He commended Quantum Terminals Limited for being the first company in the country to present its risk preparedness plan for review by the organisation.

The Chair of the committee, Prof. Schandorf, who presented the report to the NADMO National Co-ordinator, called on NADMO to support Quantum Terminal Limited to update its report to meet international standards.

He also called on NADMO to facilitate a working visit to the facility of Quantum Terminals Limited to get a first-hand information on their operations.
