GBA expresses disquiet about discharge of Delta Force members

The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has expressed disquiet about the discharge of the eight members of the vigilante group, the Delta Force, who stood trial at a Kumasi Circuit Court for allegedly storming a court.

Expressing worry over the matter, the GBA in a statement signed by its National President, Mr Benson Nutsukpui, called on the Ghana Police Service to thoroughly investigate the matter in its entirety and arrest, duly charge and prosecute persons who played a role in the attack on the court.

Eight members of the Delta Force were standing trial for allegedly storming the court premises earlier this year to free 13 of their members who were charged with conspiracy to assault for vandalising property at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council and assaulting the Regional Security Coordinator because they were against his appointment.

But the Attorney-General’s Department in Kumasi dropped the case for lack of sufficient evidence against the accused persons.

According to the statement from the GBA, justice would not be served if the discharge of the accused persons ended the matter.

It asked the police to interview the court officials, lawyers and litigants who were in the court the day the attack took place to bring the perpetrators to book.

“We wish to state that it is a threat to the rule of law if the impression is created that persons who engage in lawless acts can escape the arm of the law,” it added.
