Participants in 2018 UCMAS calls on education minister

A 39-member contingent made up of Ghanaian schoolchildren, who participated in the 2018 Universal Concept Mental Arithmetic System (UCMAS) competition in Malaysia, has called on the Minister of Education, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, and his deputies, to present their trophies to him.

The participants performed excellently, picking 38 awards at the various stages, with Ms Aseyenedi Esi Tamakloe of Ancilla Catholic Primary and Junior High School in Accra picking the Overall Best Prize at the level she contested.

Other pupils who topped their levels were David Commey, Racheal Larye and Ishmael Hector Morton, all of the Alpha Beta School, Accra, as well as Malik Hamoui of Al Rayan International School, also in Accra.

They were also at the ministry to brief the minister on what went on at the international competition and how Ghana fared at the end of the competition.

Sterling performance

Briefing the ministry, the Chief Executive Officer of the UCMAS Ghana, Mr Roger Ohemeng, explained that after the overwhelming performance of “the Ghanaian contingent in far away Kuala Lumpur, we cannot keep it to ourselves and so we need to celebrate it and introduce these children to the Ministry of Education.”

He explained that the children were able to compete in various levels and out of the 48 countries, with over 3,000 children present on the day, “we had a Ghanaian child in the person of Aseyenedi Esi Tamakloe coming out as a champion.”

Mr Ohemeng said he believed that the children had done an honour to the country by lifting the flag of Ghana high at such an international stage and that was why he felt they should be celebrated.

Dr Prempeh, who was assisted by the Deputy Minister in charge of General Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, to receive the champions, congratulated them on the feat chalked up and urged them to work harder for more successes.
