Chinua Achebe's body arrives in Nigeria

The remains of celebrated writer, Chinua Achebe has arrived in Enugu, Nigeria, ahead of final funeral rites to be held on Thursday, May 23, 2013.

The mortal remains of the illustrious writer was received by his widow, Professor Mrs Christie Achebe, his children and Engr Austin Achebe, his elder brother and leader of the Achebe family.

The body was first flown to Abuja, the federal capital territory on Tuesday morning and was received at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport by government officials, writers, cultural organisations and other associates.

Dignitaries present at the local wing of the airport included, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, Governor Peter Obi and many others.

Achebe’s casket, draped in national colours of green and white was ushered into the local wing, with pall bearers in full igbo attire as blaring trumpets, songs and dancing pervaded the hall.

A number of activities have been lined-up in honour of the acclaimed author.

Meanwhile, ANA held a lecture at the International Conference Centre (ICC), Abuja, for Achebe under the chairmanship of Niger State governor, Dr. Babangida Aliyu. A day of tributes will also be held today.

Achebe’s body will be in Awka on Wednesday and he will be buried at Ogidi, his hometown, in Anambra State on Thursday.
