Kings College dominate Achimota School at maiden X-country Games

Achimota School boys last Friday lost 1-3 to Kings College from Nigeria in the football event which drew the curtain on this year’s cross-country sports competition at the Achimota School sports field.

The four-day multi-sport competition comprised football, cricket, hockey, chess, basketball and scrabble, with Kings College and Queens College dominating many of the events.

After the Achimota girls lost 0-2 to Queens College in a football match earlier, the host boys knew they needed to lift up their game redeem their image. But the Nigerians maintained their dominance throughout the game. 

Kings College scored their first goal in the 30th minute through their skipper Prince Mbula, who perfectly converted a penalty kick after his teammate James Amete was brought down in the peanlty box to give the Nigerians a first half lead.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men in the early stages of the second half after one of their midfielders was shown a second yellow card, which rejuvenated Achimota boy who capitalised on their numerical advantage to score the equaliser with 20 minutes left to play.

Achimota’s hopes of taking the lead were shattered after their goalkeeper conceeded a penalty and was also shown a straight red card for intentionally bringing down an opponent in the penalty box. Mbula converted the resultant kick to restore his side’s lead and score a personal double.

Both sides were reduced to 10 players each as Achimota fought back in the hope of cancelling the lead but their effort was thwarted by a counter-attack by substitute Godwin Praise who scored Kings Colleges’ third goal with five minutes left to play.
