Pharmanova Limited, a local pharmaceutical manufacturing company, donated the drugs which were received by the Deputy Minister of Health, Dr Victor Asare Bampoe, in Accra yesterday.

So far, 111 cases of the disease have been recorded in seven districts in the Brong Ahafo Region, Bole in the Northern Region and Offinso North in the Ashanti Region. Twenty-eight deaths have been recorded so far.

Briefing the media on the state of affairs in the affected areas, Dr Bampoe said so far 16 cases had been recorded in Bole where six deaths had occurred. He said no death resulting from the disease had occurred in the last three days in the district.

Only one case has been recorded at Offinso North in the Ashanti Region.

Dr Bampoe said since the outbreak of the disease, the government had supported the affected areas with GH¢150,000 and 1,500 vials of antibiotics.

 Call for help

He commended the management of Pharmanova for the donation and called on other companies in the country to emulate the gesture, pointing out that the government alone could not shoulder all the responsibilities.

Dr Bampoe, who had earlier led a three-member delegation to the Brong Ahafo Region to ascertain the state of affairs, said the regional and district health management teams were running public education programmes for the early detection and reporting of the cases.

The Managing Director of Pharmanova Limited, Mr Dhananjay Tripathi, in a brief remark, said the company was touched by an appeal made by the deputy minister to pharmaceutical companies for support to contain the disease.

He expressed the hope that the drugs would go a long way to contain the situation in the affected areas.
