He noted that equipping children with strong communication skills, a broad vocabulary, and the ability to articulate their thoughts effectively were essential for their personal and academic success.

“Through spelling bees and educational initiatives, we strive to create an environment where children not only master the art of spelling but also develop a deep appreciation for the beauty of language,” he said.

Mr Lawson, who was speaking at the launch of 2023 Spellathon in Accra recently, noted that the journey to promote education and literacy went beyond spellings and competitions.

“It requires collaboration among educators, parents and society.

We must work together to create an ecosystem that encourages reading, supports literacy programmes and provides equal opportunities for all children to thrive academically,” he said.

Mission

However, Mr Lawson said Spellathon was on a committed mission to nurture the modern child to be indispensable.

“We collaborate with schools, teachers and parents to ensure that our events are inclusive, supportive, and enriching experiences for every participant.

We continually seek innovative ways to enhance the educational impact of our programmes and empower children to become lifelong learners,” he said.

“We believe in harnessing the power of healthy competition as a catalyst for learning and growth.

Our competitions foster a sense of excitement and camaraderie, igniting a passion for words that stay with our participants long after the competitions have ended,” Mr Lawson added.

 About Spellathon

Spellathon was founded in 2016 with a vision to promote education, literacy and language skills among young learners or basic school students.

It strives to inspire, challenge and empower the next generation, equipping them with the language skills and confidence to excel in an ever-evolving world.

The competition for this year is open to students in the Greater Accra, Ashanti, Bono, Central, Eastern and Western regions.

The 2023 Spellathon is in four parts thus the zonal, super-zonal, regional and then the national finale where students will compete in the regionals, nationals and then international.

The judging criteria is based on spelling accuracy, word meanings, pronunciation and language proficiency.
