Beauticians association adopts innovation in training

The National Association of Beauticians and Hairdressers (NABH) is adopting a new system of training beauticians and hairdressers in the country which would add modernity to their profession.

The new competence-based training dubbed, ‘Standard and Cooperative training,’ would ensure a dual apprenticeship training, combining the workplace/practical and school-based training.

This is to modernise the traditional apprenticeship system and help produce competent, trained personnel equipped to meet the industrial standard.

Speaking at the 3rd National Delegates Conference of NABH in Ho, the National President of the association, Madam Antoinette Sewe, announced that the training was under the auspices of the Council for Technical and Vocational Education Training (COVET) and Ghana Skills Development Initiative (GSDI).

 Attractive business

The aim, she explained, was to make the job of beauticians and hairdressers more attractive to the youth, especially women.

She explained that people in this trade were often considered as dropouts who could not continue their education to higher level and, therefore, had to make a living through this trade.

However, Madam Sewe indicated that “this is not the case because it takes creativity for a person to excel in the job and, therefore, it is rather a trade for intelligent people who have the desire to be entrepreneurs”.

 Capacity building

She stated that over the years, NABH had been organising capacity building programmes for its members to equip them with the modern way of operating their businesses and also to make more income.

She said the association, in January this year, organised a three-day leadership training for members, to equip them in their respective roles as employers and leaders.

“They were also taken through technical skills, highlighting on chemical application and hair treatment for maximum outcome and satisfaction,” she added.

According to her, it was necessary for beauticians to occasionally have knowledge of new products, techniques and trends, to be successful.

 Training centre

For these reasons, she revealed that NABH was constructing an office complex in Accra at Ashalaja, with a training centre, at an estimated cost of GH¢600,000. The complex, which will also have facilities such as classrooms, cafeterias, laboratories, conference halls and meeting rooms, is expected to be completed in three years.

“We are going hi-tech with this trade,” she said and called for maximum support from members and other donors to make their dreams attainable.

The Deputy Volta Regional Minister, Mr Francis Ganyaglo, said organisational skills were important to maintain work and good sales for a lucrative career.

He noted that the work of beauticians was very important because apart from earning a living, the profession also helped to reduce the burden of unemployment situation in the country because most of these beauticians were self-employed.

Mr Ganyaglo said it was appropriate for beauticians to improve upon their services to their clients and, therefore, commended the leadership of the association for the great strides over the years and the vision to make the work of beauticians more appealing.
