For instance a South African athlete, Aiden Smith had complained about the treatment of athletes and alleged restrictions on food supply at their hostel accommodation.

Responding to the claim on food restriction, Ms Commey said organisers were surprised by the allegations but acknowledged that complaints are common at major sporting events.

“Personally, I was a little taken aback by the concerns over the rationing of food. As organisers, we know there will be complaints,” she stated.

She maintained that there was adequate food available for athletes, adding that she had personally inspected the accommodation facilities.

“I have personally visited the rooms and there is a lot of food available, so we do not know where that claim came from,” she added.

The African Senior Athletics Championships began on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at the University of Ghana Stadium and is expected to conclude on May 19, 2026.
