Grant Miracles Aboagye 'unrestricted access' to his lawyers – NPP demands after he was reportedly picked up by EOCO at airport

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has reportedly arrested Dennis Miracles Aboagye, a member of the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) communications team.

He was said to have been picked up by EOCO at the Accra International Airport on Sunday [July 12, 2026], prompting a strong response from the opposition party.

Leading figures within the NPP have confirmed the arrest, but EOCO has not publicly commented on the arrest or responded to the allegations made by the NPP.

In a Facebook post, the NPP's General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, stated that Miracles was taken into custody by EOCO officers with the assistance of immigration officials.

According to the post, his lawyers have since been denied access to him, his whereabouts remain unknown, and no charges have been filed against him.

Mr Kodua called on the authorities to grant Miracles unrestricted access to his lawyers and family, citing Article 14(2) of the 1992 Constitution on the rights of persons in custody.

He expressed concern that the arrest appeared to be part of a pattern of actions targeting members of the NPP.

The NPP General Secretary cautioned state institutions against being used for purposes other than lawful enforcement, insisting that public agencies must operate within the limits of the law and uphold constitutional protections. He urged NPP members to remain calm, lawful and united while the party seeks clarity on the circumstances surrounding the arrest.

The Member of Parliament for Ofoase/Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, also expressed concern about the arrest.

In a post on X, he said: "The use of arrests and detention as a tool to intimidate political opponents by this government is just shocking."

Oppong Nkrumah argued that Aboagye was not a flight risk and could have been invited to assist with any investigation. "When a man is easily locatable, there is no reason for which you will arrest and detain him on a Saturday to be investigated the following week," he said.

He further warned that the government's approach could undermine progress made in strengthening the rule of law. "The precedents being set by this government just undermine all the decades of progress we've made as a country on matters of rule of law," Oppong Nkrumah added.

The National Organiser of the NPP, Henry Nana Boakye, announced that the party will march to EOCO on Monday, July 13, to seek clarity on the arrest.

Speaking on Channel One News, Nana Boakye alleged that Miracles was arrested without any prior invitation or notice from EOCO regarding an investigation.

"Miracles has not received any invitation from EOCO. He has not been informed of any wrongdoing. He has not been told that he is under any form of investigation," Nana Boakye stated.
