He also lauded residents in the municipality for their support and co-operation during the challenging times of the installation of two rival chiefs in the municipality and the events leading to the death of the Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alhaji Adams Mahama.

Speaking to journalists in Bolgatanga on the security situation in the municipality, Mr Woyongo observed that while the police and military professionally handled the situation ,residents also co-operated with them in their operations.

He called for further collaboration to ensure a successful performance of the final funeral rites (Adua) of the chairman whose remains were interred recently after he died of an acid attack. One of the suspects, who allegedly attacked him, Gregory Afoko, is currently standing trial in Accra while an alleged accomplice, Asabke Alande, is on the run.The police have declared Alande a wanted man.

Chieftaincy

The minister, however, indicated that his outfit was still monitoring the security situation on the ground on how best “this chieftaincy problem in the municipality could be resolved.”

The Upper East Regional House of Chiefs has asked the two rival chiefs, Mr Raymond Alafia Abilba, and Naba Abeka Noge Buuri Maltinga, to file their chieftaincy declaration forms for the House of Chiefs to look into the matter.

This followed the holding of two separate ceremonies by the two during which they were installed as Bolga Naba.

"After the regional house of chiefs settles on who becomes the legitimate Bolga Naba, any aggrieved party not satisfied with the outcome could go and seek redress at the National House of Chiefs and if they are still not satisfied they could proceed to the Supreme Court," he pointed out.

Sale of acid

Mr Woyongo also called for the regulation of the  sale of acid in the country.

"The easy acquisition of such corrosive substances and dangerous chemicals poses security threats hence it is important to take a second look at how they are even imported into the country," he stated.
