‘Produce morally upright graduates for nation’

The Chancellor of the Pentecost University College (PUC), Apostle Alexander N.Y. Kumi-Larbi, has attributed the high moral decadence in society partly to the deviation of religious-based tertiary institutions from their mandate of delivering higher education alongside good morals.

While admitting that some of the institutions were doing well in that endeavour, Apostle Kumi-Larbi said that was not enough and stressed that all of them needed to put in much effort to address the challenge.

Apostle Kumi-Larbi was speaking at the 7th Congregation of the PUC at Sowutuom in Accra last Saturday.

He said it was a widely held view that faith-based institutions contributed a lot in terms of morality and discipline to society, but noted that it was not happening now.

In all, 108 students graduated with Bachelor’s degrees and Master’s in Theology, Business Administration and Information and Communications Technology (ICT).

Moral decadence

Apostle Kumi-Larbi said, “Indeed, over 60 per cent of Ghanaians are Christians; yet, spiritual bankruptcy, corruption, political nepotism, intolerance, violence, homosexuality, internet fraud (sakawa), drug trafficking, and getting-rich-quick mentality are rife in our society.”

He said tertiary education training was basically to address societal problems through research, critical thinking, creativity and innovation but that had not been adequately achieved and stressed that faith-based institutions needed to play a key role to make it happen.

He, however, commended the PUC for producing good graduates for the job market.

Integrity

Apostle Kumi-Larbi advised the graduates to be disciplined and always display a high sense of morality.

Integrity, in his view, is the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles.

The Rector of the PUC, Dr Peter Ohene Kyei, reiterated the call on the graduates to be morally upright and disciplined in all fields of endeavour.

Speaking on the theme: “Empowering students to serve with integrity and the fear of God,” he noted that education without character formation grounded in the fear of God was meaningless, wasteful and dangerous.

He said societal transformation and economic progress had direct links with the morality and character of individuals.
